Theatre Summary Sample: The Little Theatre That Could
Pickwick Theatre, Syracuse, IN
There has been a theatre in the same spot in Syracuse, Indiana since 1905.
It started with an all wooden structure in the early 1900’s known as the “Theatorium.” It was renamed the Oakland sometime in the 1920’s, before catching fire. The next day the Warsaw Daily News reported that the fire was responsible for three injuries and $8,000 in damage, but luckily no fatalities.
The owners rebuilt the theatre and added a second story to the theatre. It continued to operate under the name Oakland until they rebuilt the theatre in 1936. Afterwards, the entire block of businesses began to work under the collective name Pickwick.
In 1946, another fire occurred on the Pickwick block, razing the entire block except for the theatre. The second story and the lobby were completely destroyed, but the actual theatre survived.
This happened again in 1970’s. Once more a fire swept through the entire Pickwick block, completely destroying all of the neighboring buildings, except for the theatre. The Pickwick theatre is the only building to have survived the 1970’s fire, all of the others were demolished.
The Pickwick Theatre is still in operation today showing first run movies once a day.
